About Thymalin
What it is
Thymalin is a peptide preparation derived from thymus tissue, developed in the Soviet Union and used clinically in Russia. It is a complex of thymic peptides rather than a single defined molecule, which is an important distinction from Thymosin Alpha-1.
How it is understood to work
The thymus is where T lymphocytes mature, and thymic peptide preparations are studied for their influence on that maturation and on immune signalling more broadly. Because the preparation is a mixture rather than a single sequence, attributing an observed effect to a specific molecule is difficult, and that limitation runs through much of the literature.
What research has looked at
Immune function in animal models and Russian clinical work on immune modulation in ageing. As with several Russian-origin peptides on this site, independent replication outside that literature is limited.
Handling and storage

Thymalin is a peptide complex originally extracted from thymus tissue and now produced synthetically, studied for its role in immune research. The thymus is the gland where T-cells mature, and Thymalin is investigated in cell-model studies of age-related immune decline — sometimes called immunosenescence. It belongs to a family of peptide bioregulators developed by Russian researcher Vladimir Khavinson, whose work explored how short peptides interact with tissue-specific gene expression. Researchers compare it to Thymosin α-1 (a single defined peptide from the same tissue) in studies of T-cell function.
