About Semax
What it is
Semax is a synthetic peptide derived from a fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone, modified at one end to slow enzymatic breakdown. It was developed in Russia and, unlike most compounds on this site, has been in clinical use there for some years, though it holds no licence in the UK, EU or US.
How it is understood to work
Cell and animal work has examined its effect on brain-derived neurotrophic factor and nerve growth factor expression, and on the dopaminergic and serotonergic systems. The parent ACTH fragment was chosen because it retains neuroactive properties while lacking the hormonal activity of the full molecule.
What research has looked at
Research has looked at neuroprotection in ischaemia models, learning and memory tasks in animals, and attention paradigms. The bulk of the literature is Russian and the methodology is not always directly comparable with Western trial standards.
Handling and storage
Peptides intended for research on nervous-system models are often studied at low concentrations, so accurate reconstitution matters more than usual — small volume errors become large concentration errors. Refrigerate in solution.
Supplied for in-vitro laboratory research only. Nothing above describes a dose, a protocol, or a use in humans or animals, and none of these compounds is a licensed medicine in the UK.

Research Information
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide derived from the N-terminal fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH 4-10), modified with a Pro-Gly-Pro extension for stability. It's studied for its role in neuropeptide research. Researchers are interested in how it interacts with BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) signalling and dopaminergic pathways in cell-culture models. The compound has a long history in Russian neuropharmacology research and is used to study melanocortin-independent ACTH fragment activity.
Research areas

Analytical methods
Identity and purity are typically confirmed at source by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry.
Storage and handling
Store lyophilised at -20°C, away from moisture and direct light. Once reconstituted, store at 2–8°C and use within the timeframe specified on the source datasheet.
For Research Use Only. Not for human or veterinary use.
Batch tested
Every batch is tested for identity and purity, and we publish the certificate.
