About MOTS-c

What it is

MOTS-c is unusual: a sixteen-amino-acid peptide encoded not by the cell nucleus but by mitochondrial DNA. It belongs to a small class called mitochondrial-derived peptides, discovered only in the last fifteen years, and its existence complicated the long-held assumption that mitochondrial DNA coded almost exclusively for components of the respiratory chain.

How it is understood to work

Laboratory work has focused on AMP-activated protein kinase, the enzyme cells use as a fuel gauge, and on the folate-methionine cycle. It has also been observed to translocate to the nucleus under metabolic stress and influence gene expression there, which makes it a signal travelling from mitochondrion to nucleus rather than the other way round.

What research has looked at

Research has examined glucose handling in cell and animal models, exercise physiology, and metabolic stress responses. It is a comparatively young area and the field is still establishing basics.

Handling and storage

Lyophilised, reconstitute with bacteriostatic water, refrigerate. Standard peptide precautions: room temperature before opening, gentle reconstitution, no vigorous agitation.

Supplied for in-vitro laboratory research only. Nothing above describes a dose, a protocol, or a use in humans or animals, and none of these compounds is a licensed medicine in the UK.

Research Information

MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene, studied for its role in metabolic and mitochondrial research. Researchers are interested in how mitochondrial-derived peptides communicate with the nucleus and regulate metabolic pathways — particularly insulin sensitivity and glucose handling — in cell-culture studies. Most published work has used myocyte and adipocyte cell lines to examine AMPK pathway activation and exercise-related metabolic adaptation models.

Research areas

  • AMPK signalling pathway studies
  • Mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) research
  • Insulin sensitivity cell models
  • Myocyte and adipocyte metabolic research

Analytical methods

Identity and purity are typically confirmed at source by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry.

Storage and handling

Store lyophilised at -20°C, away from moisture and direct light. Once reconstituted, store at 2–8°C and use within the timeframe specified on the source datasheet.

For Research Use Only. Not for human or veterinary use.

Batch tested

Every batch is tested for identity and purity, and we publish the certificate.
