About LL-37

What it is

LL-37 is the only antimicrobial peptide produced by the human cathelicidin gene, cleaved from a precursor called hCAP18. The name is literal: thirty-seven amino acids beginning with two leucines. It is part of innate immunity and is found in neutrophils, epithelial surfaces and skin.

How it is understood to work

It forms an amphipathic helix — hydrophobic on one face, positively charged on the other — which lets it insert into and disrupt negatively charged bacterial membranes while largely sparing mammalian cells, whose outer surfaces carry less negative charge. It also has immunomodulatory activity independent of killing bacteria, influencing chemotaxis and cytokine release, so it acts as a signal as well as a weapon.

What research has looked at

Antimicrobial activity across bacterial species, biofilm models, wound healing, and its dual role in inflammation, where context determines whether it appears protective or aggravating.

Handling and storage

Highly cationic and prone to sticking to glass and some plastics, which can quietly reduce your working concentration. Low-binding tubes are worth using. Reconstitute gently and refrigerate.

Supplied for in-vitro laboratory research only. Nothing above describes a dose, a protocol, or a use in humans or animals, and none of these compounds is a licensed medicine in the UK.

Research Information

LL-37 is a synthetic 37-amino-acid peptide identical to the only human cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide, studied for its role in innate immunity research. Researchers are interested in its dual function — both as a direct antimicrobial against bacterial membranes and as an immunomodulator affecting cytokine signalling, wound-healing pathways, and angiogenesis in cell-culture studies. Most published work has used keratinocyte and immune cell lines to examine these mechanisms.

Research areas

  • Antimicrobial mechanism studies
  • Innate immunity cell-line research
  • Wound-healing pathway cell models
  • Keratinocyte cell-line studies

Analytical methods

Identity and purity are typically confirmed at source by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry.

Storage and handling

Store lyophilised at -20°C, away from moisture and direct light. Once reconstituted, store at 2–8°C and use within the timeframe specified on the source datasheet.

For Research Use Only. Not for human or veterinary use.

Batch tested

Every batch is tested for identity and purity, and we publish the certificate.
