About KPV

What it is

KPV is a tripeptide — lysine, proline, valine — corresponding to the last three amino acids of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. It is about as small as a peptide gets while still being of research interest.

How it is understood to work

The parent hormone acts on melanocortin receptors and affects pigmentation among other things. This fragment appears to retain anti-inflammatory activity while losing the pigmentary effect, and some of that activity appears to operate inside the cell rather than at a surface receptor, with work pointing to interference with NF-kappa-B signalling. Its small size is thought to help it enter cells directly.

What research has looked at

Intestinal epithelial cell models, colitis models in animals, and work on cytokine expression. It appears frequently in gut inflammation research specifically.

Handling and storage

Very small and correspondingly soluble and stable compared with longer chains. Standard storage still applies: cold, dark, and no repeated freeze-thaw.

Supplied for in-vitro laboratory research only. Nothing above describes a dose, a protocol, or a use in humans or animals, and none of these compounds is a licensed medicine in the UK.

Research Information

KPV is a tripeptide (Lysine-Proline-Valine), the C-terminal fragment of α-MSH, studied for its role in inflammation and tissue research. Unlike its parent compound α-MSH, KPV doesn't act on melanocortin receptors but appears to enter cells directly via the PEPT1 transporter, where it interacts with intracellular inflammatory pathways. Most published work has used intestinal and skin cell lines to examine its effects on NF-κB signalling and pro-inflammatory cytokine expression.

Research areas

  • NF-κB signalling pathway studies
  • PEPT1 transporter research
  • Inflammatory cytokine expression cell models
  • Intestinal cell-line research

Analytical methods

Identity and purity are typically confirmed at source by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry.

Storage and handling

Store lyophilised at -20°C, away from moisture and direct light. Once reconstituted, store at 2–8°C and use within the timeframe specified on the source datasheet.

For Research Use Only. Not for human or veterinary use.

Batch tested

Every batch is tested for identity and purity, and we publish the certificate.
