About DSIP

What it is

Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide is a nine-amino-acid sequence isolated in the 1970s from the cerebral venous blood of rabbits during induced slow-wave sleep. It is one of the older peptides in this catalogue and one of the least well understood, which is an unusual combination.

How it is understood to work

Despite the name, no clear mechanism has been established. It does not have a well-characterised dedicated receptor, and the literature includes work on effects that have little to do with sleep — stress responses, thermoregulation, and analgesia among them. The name reflects the circumstances of its discovery rather than a settled understanding of what it does.

What research has looked at

Sleep architecture in animal models, stress and corticotropin responses, and thermoregulation. Findings across the literature are inconsistent, and that inconsistency is itself the honest summary of the field.

Handling and storage

Lyophilised. Reconstitute gently, refrigerate, and avoid freeze-thaw cycling.

Supplied for in-vitro laboratory research only. Nothing above describes a dose, a protocol, or a use in humans or animals, and none of these compounds is a licensed medicine in the UK.

Research Information

DSIP (Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide) is a naturally occurring nonapeptide first isolated from rabbit cerebral venous blood, studied for its role in sleep and stress-response research. Researchers are interested in how it interacts with multiple pathways — including GABAergic, dopaminergic, and corticosteroid signalling — in cell-culture studies. Most published work has used neural cell lines to examine its effects on neuronal excitability and stress-marker expression.

Research areas

  • GABAergic neural pathway studies
  • Corticosteroid signalling research
  • Neuronal excitability cell-model studies
  • Comparative sleep-related peptide research

Analytical methods

Identity and purity are typically confirmed at source by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry.

Storage and handling

Store lyophilised at -20°C, away from moisture and direct light. Once reconstituted, store at 2–8°C and use within the timeframe specified on the source datasheet.

For Research Use Only. Not for human or veterinary use.

Batch tested

Every batch is tested for identity and purity, and we publish the certificate.
