About Bacteriostatic Water
What it is
Sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative. Every lyophilised peptide on this site is a dry powder and is physically unusable until it is put into solution, which is what this is for.
How it is understood to work
The benzyl alcohol inhibits bacterial growth, which is what allows a vial to be entered more than once rather than being discarded after a single withdrawal. It does nothing to preserve the peptide itself — chemical degradation of the peptide chain proceeds regardless, which is why refrigeration and short in-solution lifetimes still matter.
What research has looked at
Not a research compound in its own right; it is laboratory consumable. Worth noting that plain sterile water and bacteriostatic water are not interchangeable: the former has no preservative and is single-use.
Handling and storage
Store at room temperature. Add slowly down the inside wall of the peptide vial rather than directly onto the powder, and let the pellet dissolve without shaking. Swirl gently if needed. Foaming means you are denaturing the peptide.
Supplied for in-vitro laboratory research only. Nothing above describes a dose, a protocol, or a use in humans or animals, and none of these compounds is a licensed medicine in the UK.
Research Information
Bacteriostatic Water is USP-grade sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative, used in laboratory work as a multi-dose reconstitution solvent for lyophilised peptides. The benzyl alcohol inhibits bacterial growth, allowing the same vial to be punctured multiple times over a research project. Standard solvent for in-vitro peptide reconstitution work where sterility across multiple sampling events matters.

Analytical methods
Identity and purity are typically confirmed at source by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry.
Storage and handling
Store at room temperature, away from direct light. Once the vial is first punctured, use within 28 days; bacteriostatic preservative loses efficacy over time.
For Research Use Only. Not for human or veterinary use.
Batch tested
Every batch is tested for identity and purity, and we publish the certificate.
