About ARA-290

What it is

ARA-290, also called cibinetide, is an eleven-amino-acid peptide taken from the helix B region of erythropoietin. It exists because of a genuinely elegant piece of receptor biology.

How it is understood to work

Erythropoietin does two quite separate things. Through the classical EPO receptor homodimer it drives red blood cell production; through a different receptor — a heterodimer of the EPO receptor and the beta-common receptor, often called the innate repair receptor — it is associated with tissue-protective signalling. ARA-290 was designed to engage only the second. In laboratory models it shows the tissue-protective signalling without raising haematocrit, which is the whole point of the molecule.

What research has looked at

Neuropathy models, particularly small-fibre neuropathy, and inflammatory models. It has been through clinical trials including work in sarcoidosis, though it holds no marketing authorisation.

Handling and storage

Lyophilised, reconstitute with bacteriostatic water, refrigerate. A short sequence and reasonably robust, but the usual freeze-thaw caution applies.

Supplied for in-vitro laboratory research only. Nothing above describes a dose, a protocol, or a use in humans or animals, and none of these compounds is a licensed medicine in the UK.

Research Information

ARA-290 is a synthetic 11-amino-acid peptide derived from a fragment of erythropoietin, studied for its role in tissue protection research. Unlike full erythropoietin, it doesn't affect red blood cell production but appears to retain the tissue-protective and anti-inflammatory activity via the innate repair receptor (IRR). Most published work has used neuronal and endothelial cell lines to examine its effects on neuropathic and inflammatory tissue-damage models.

Research areas

  • Innate repair receptor (IRR) studies
  • Neuronal cell-line protection research
  • Endothelial cell tissue-protection studies
  • Neuropathic pain pathway cell models

Analytical methods

Identity and purity are typically confirmed at source by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry.

Storage and handling

Store lyophilised at -20°C, away from moisture and direct light. Once reconstituted, store at 2–8°C and use within the timeframe specified on the source datasheet.

For Research Use Only. Not for human or veterinary use.

Batch tested

Every batch is tested for identity and purity, and we publish the certificate.
